What Is a Breath Anchor and Why Does It Matter?
A breath anchor is a specific physical point in the body where you follow the sensation of breathing. It is the foundation you return to every time thoughts wander.
Overview
A breath anchor is a specific physical point in the body where we choose to follow the sensation of breathing. Not to control the breath, not to change it - simply to notice it.
Why breath and not something else? A few good reasons. Breath is always here - you can't forget it at home. It provides a clear physical sensation you can return to again and again. And it changes constantly - each breath slightly different from the last - which requires active presence rather than mechanical habit.
Three common anchor points:
Nostrils - the sensation of air entering and leaving, the different temperature of incoming and outgoing air. Subtle and precise.
Chest - the rise and fall of the chest. Easier to feel, suitable for those who struggle to breathe through the nose or to sense the nostrils.
Abdomen - the movement of the belly in breathing. The grossest of the three, often the easiest to connect with.
There is no 'correct' point - each works. The recommendation: choose one and stay with it(Further reading: step-by-step meditation guide) throughout the practice.(Further reading: what is mind-wandering)
With Nowvigation, thumb movement on the screen adds a second anchor(Further reading: the first 4 minutes and why they matter) - an additional physical sensation that creates another layer of engagement and allows the app to detect when attention has left.
